I'd like to take a moment and welcome you to my website. This website is meant to be a resource for students and parents. I'm always adding content to supplement what is being taught with my course curriculum. Currently I'm in the process of flipping my course content so please be patient as I move my desktop documents to online. Thanks again for checking this site out!
I grew up in Davenport, IA and was a graduate of North High School in 1992. Following high school, I attended the University of Northern Iowa graduating in 1997 with B.A. in history education. In the fall of 1997 I started my teaching career as a seventh grade geography teacher at Fort Madison Middle School. In 2001, I transferred to the high school to teach U.S. History and American Government. During my tenure I continued my educational career and received my M.S. in Sports Management from Western Illinois in 2007 and my Iowa Administrative License from Viterbo University in 2013. I was very fortunate to be a 2009 Burlington Hawkeye Teacher of the Year Finalist.
Recently I was recognized by Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate for stepping up and organizing Fort Madison High School’s participation in the statewide Iowa Youth Straw Poll for the 2016 & 2020 general election. Our students voted for their choice and then the results were totaled with the other schools from across Iowa. This was in an effort to include our student’s voices in the statewide straw poll so that the students could receive a unique civic educational experience.
Because of this initiative, the Iowa Youth Straw Poll was nationally recognized and won the National Association of State Boards of Education Award for Outstanding Leadership in Voter Education from the National Parent Student Mock Election. In addition, the social media aspect, #IAparticipate, was a national top 5 finalist for a Government Social Media Award.
In 2020, FMHS received the Carrie Chapman Catt Award for registering 90% of our students who were eligible to vote.
Please feel free to contact me any time for whatever reason. Thanks for your time and I look forward to meeting you soon!
